Babies are cute, and their clothes are no exception! It is always fun to experiment with different styles and designs when it comes to dressing up our little ones. Today, I am going to show you how to make your own baby clothes with a tie, an adorable and practical item that can add a touch of personality to any outfit.
What you need:
A piece of fabric for the body of the clothes (about 20 inches by 20 inches)
A piece of fabric for the sleeves (about 10 inches by 20 inches)
A piece of tie fabric (about 10 inches by 15 inches)
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Measuring tape
Marker or pencil
Buttons or Velcro for closure
Step 1: Measure and mark the body fabric.
First, measure your baby’s neck size and add about 2 inches to it. This will be the width of the tie at the neckline. Mark this measurement on the body fabric using a marker or pencil. Then, measure the length of the body fabric you will need to cover your baby’s torso. This will depend on your baby’s age and size. Once you have measured the length, mark it on the fabric.
Step 2: Cut out the body fabric.
Using scissors, cut out the body fabric according to the measurements you marked. Make sure to leave enough room for seams and allow for some error in case you need to adjust the fit later.
Step 3: Measure and mark the sleeve fabric.
Next, measure your baby’s arm length from shoulder to wrist. Add about 2 inches to this measurement for seams and room to grow into the sleeve. Mark this measurement on the sleeve fabric using a marker or pencil. Then, measure the width of the sleeve fabric you will need to cover your baby’s arms. This will also depend on your baby’s age and size. Once you have measured the width, mark it on the fabric.
Step 4: Cut out the sleeve fabric.
Using scissors, cut out the sleeve fabric according to the measurements you marked. Again, make sure to leave enough room for seams and allow for some error in case you need to adjust the fit later.
Step 5: Sew the body and sleeve fabrics together.
Now, it is time to start sewing! Take the body fabric and place it right-side up on your sewing machine or table. Then, take one of the sleeve fabrics and place it right-side down on top of the body fabric, aligning the edges as best as you can. Use your sewing machine or needle and thread to sew along the edge, connecting the body and sleeve fabrics together. Repeat this process for the other sleeve.
Step 6: Measure and mark the tie fabric.
Once the body and sleeves are sewn together, it is time to add the tie. Measure your baby’s neck size and add about 2 inches to it. This will be the width of the tie at the neckline. Mark this measurement on the tie fabric using a marker or pencil. Then, measure the length of the tie fabric you will need to go around your baby’s neck and fasten at the back. This will depend on your baby’s age and size, as well as how long you want the tie to be. Once you have measured the length, mark it on the fabric.
Step 7: Cut out the tie fabric.
Using scissors, cut out the tie fabric according to the measurements you marked. Remember to leave enough room for seams and allow for some error in case you need to adjust the fit later.
Step 8: Sew the tie onto the clothes.
Now, take the tie fabric and place it right-side up on your sewing machine or table. Then, take the body and sleeve fabrics that you have already sewn together and place them right-side down on top of the tie fabric, aligning the edges as best as you can. Use your sewing machine or needle and thread to sew along the edge, connecting the tie to the clothes. Make sure to leave enough room at each end of the tie so that it can be tied around your baby’s neck comfortably without getting caught up in any seams or buttons.
Step 9: Add closures (optional).
If you want to add closures such as buttons or Velcro to your baby clothes, now is the time to do so! Use your sewing machine or needle and thread to sew them onto the appropriate places on the clothes where you want them to be located (e.g., at one end of each sleeve). Remember not to forget about adding closures at both ends if you are making a long-sleeved outfit!
